Yesssssss! I'm so excited to share this smoothie post with you because I assume that you, like me, are a crazy dog person. In a good way. Meaning you love dogs. So much so that you may have been known to cook for them.
Chicken jerky, sweet potato chips, doggie meatloaf -- all part of my cook-for-dogs-repertoire. But now I've got a doggie breakfast specialty as well, to round out Smoothie Week: a kale and spinach peanut butter smoothie that is not only for them, it's also for you!
This easy-to-make smoothie is loaded with healthy ingredients that are good for you but also good (and perfectly safe) for your favorite poochie. And the slightly larger portion size accommodates you both: pour a little bit (start with 1/4 cup for a medium-sized dog) into a bowl for your pal and save the rest for yourself.
Now, for those of you giving me the "whatchootalkinboutWillis" look, believe me: dogs love this smoothie. Mine go cray cray over it. Doubtful? Please see Exhibit A, El Jefe consuming his kale, spinach, banana and peanut butter green power smoothie:
Tip: Using the same technique we learned earlier in the week for making nut milk ice (and other handy tips), you can freeze small portions of this green power smoothie (I like to use silicon baking cups because they hold about 1/4 cup liquid) and then defrost them whenever your fur baby needs a treat. Trust me, they don't care if the smoothie is served slightly warm from the microwave.
No dog? No worries. This green power smoothie makes a healthy and delicious breakfast, even if you're a cat lover. :-)

Green Power Smoothie (for you and your dog)
Feel free to omit the spinach and use all kale if you prefer.
Ingredients:
1 cup torn kale
1 cup bagged frozen spinach (fresh is fine, too)
1 frozen banana
1 tablespoon peanut butter
1 1/4 cups water
1-2 tablespoons honey (optional -- this is mostly for you, not the dogs)
Directions:
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth, adding a bit more water if necessary.

I'm not sure I love my dog that much. ;-) I might make it for myself, though!! :-D
ReplyDeleteBTW, LOVE the fabric in the photo!
The beauty of this smoothie is that it makes an extra-large portion, so that there's plenty to share! (Thanks, I love that fabric, too!!)
DeleteLooks and sounds so good! You are making me hungry!
